This personal story is written from the heart by a very strong & brave stroke survivor. As the mum of Toni, I guess one could say I am biased, but I have lived this story with Toni & it definitely is a good read for all. Stroke victims & caregivers; this is a must read to hear a young mum's struggle as she comes to terms with such a devastating stroke. You will learn attitude is the key to overcome your struggle as you tell yourself; Never Give In, Never Give Up. Half Moon Bay, Auckland, New Zealand.

When we hear that someone has had a stroke, can we know, even a little, about what it is like? What has changed, what can be reversed, what makes recovery possible? Even if/when someone describes what they have been through, can we really grasp the details? In Toni's memoir, she helps us to navigate many elements of stroke. She shares the shock and devastation – and that of her husband and other loved ones, of having a completely unexpected stroke at a very young age and as a new mother. First, the realization of what has occurred, then the effect / limitations on her mind and body, followed by determination to regain strength and abilities, while dealing with anger, frustration and emotional lability. A huge challenge! Thankfully, many encouraged Toni and provided outlets for therapy and support; but it is Toni’s strength and will that kept (and keep!) her going to address challenges in her path. Completing a major swim is such an amazing accomplishment! I really enjoyed all the details of that swim – and cheering her on! And all of the photos. Thank you, Toni, for sharing your story and guiding us in ways to support stroke survivors. Thank you for sharing how to help someone feel ‘the same’ while still addressing ‘challenges’, especially those that cannot be seen but are there. It is great to know of special tools that provide greater independence, and let people realize what is possible. Seemingly small / simple things can make a huge difference. You have managed to do so much for others – a caring and involved Mom, an enthusiastic volunteer and school advocate, an accomplished swimmer, an author. You are a true inspiration. I hope your book reaches many, many people and helps to create a greater awareness for stroke victims – and the value of determination. Looking forward to other achievements that you, no doubt, are planning. xx

A true and inspirational story of a fit and fabulous mother of an 8 month old baby girl who had a massive stroke at sea, at age 35. Not only did she survive, her determination to walk again and to regain as much function as she possibly could, would lead to amongst many other achievements both large and small, achieving her dream of competing in and completing an ocean swim in New Zealand. Toni is an absolute inspiration, she puts many of us able bodied people to shame with her sheer determination. To write this book (& she did write it - every word) must have been such a mammoth, challenging and time consuming effort for her. It made me laugh, it made me cry - but ultimately her story inspired me. Her bravery, courage, humour and grit in the face of such adversity is a huge wake-up call for all of us. We take so much for granted. It is time to be grateful. Thank you Toni, your attitude and fortitude are, once again, inspirational. I wish you and your amazing family all the best in your future endeavours. Naomi Ashman, Auckland, NZ.
